Snake Symbolism

Snakes fascinate and terrify most of us. Because of this near universal reaction, and because snakes have played such important roles in the mythology of just about every religion, we know they have relevance to the psycho-spiritual life of every human being.

Throughout history the connection between the snake and the feminine principle has been profound and intimate: from Eve to the Serpent Lady of Ashtoreth and Kadesh; from Ishtar, the Babylonian Lady of Vision to the Serpent Goddess of Crete; from Kebhut, the goddess of freshness who played a part in Egyptian funerary ceremonies to the asp that transported Cleopatra to the afterlife; from Greece’s ancient Earth Mother Gaea to the Golden Age’s Queen, Hera, and her step-daughter Athena, goddess of wisdom; from east to west, serpents have always tempted, personified, accompanied, awakened, transformed, and empowered women and goddesses.

A snake is one of the most versatile of all creatures. It can live in the ground or in a tree, in the desert or in the water, but it is primarily considered a chthonic creature, i.e. as pertaining to the earth and the spirits of the underworld. This accounts for its association with the physical death of the body; however, because it periodically sheds its skin and emerges as if reborn, it is also seen as a symbol of transformation and the perpetual capacity for renewal.

Psychologically, because of its phallic form, it is a masculine sexual symbol; yet, at the same time, because of its devouring nature, it also suggests feminine sexuality as well as extremely powerful unconscious feminine energies. In this latter regard, Jung noted that distressing dreams about snakes are symptomatic of anguish over a reactivation of the destructive potential of the unconscious. It is no wonder they are almost universally feared.

Snakes are also associated with divine revelation. Evidence from shrines and oracular sites of the Goddess in Babylon, Sumer, Anatolia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome suggests that sacred serpents were kept and fed by priestesses who were consulted for prophecy. Perhaps it is this association that led Philo of Alexandria to believe that the snake was the most spiritual of animals.

In sum, Cirlot’s A Dictionary of Symbols notes: “If all symbols are really functions and signs of things imbued with energy, then the serpent or snake is, by analogy, symbolic of energy itself — of force pure and simple…” Thus is Hinduism’s Shakti personified as Kundalini, a Sanskrit word meaning “circular power.” It is said the sleeping serpent-goddess is coiled in the pelvis and can be awakened through spiritual exercises, especially yoga. When aroused, she rises up through the spinal chakras until she reaches the head, completely transforming the individual along the way.

Whatever we call this energy, spirit persons from every religion have reported powerful and often very distressing physical and psychological symptoms consistent with this symbolism. Like Indra’s Diamond Net which intuitively prefigured Jung’s collective unconscious, quantum physics’ Holographic Universe, and the worldwide internet thousands of years ago, the Kundalini goddess may well be an ancient expression of a scientific reality: to wit, the very painful but ultimately healing transformation of consciousness we see taking place all around us in the world today.

What is Tatanka

What Is “Tatanka”?
In the Lakota language, the word “tatanka” is translated as “buffalo” or “buffalo bull.” However, according to native Lakota speakers, the literal translation is something more like “He who owns us.” Lakota elder Birgil Kills Straight explains it this way:

“The four-leggeds came before the two-leggeds. They are our older brother, we came from them. Before them, we were the root people. We came from them. We are the same thing. That is why we are spiritually related to them. We call them in our language “Tatanka,” which means “He Who Owns Us.” We cannot say that we own the buffalo because he owns us.1

Today, “bison” is considered to be the correct name for the species. Though both “buffalo” and “bison” are widely accepted and are often used interchangeably, the scientific name for the species is “bison bison.” The term “buffalo” is more frequently used in American Indian communities, especially when referring to the buffalo in its cultural context.

In Lakota, “tanka” means “great” or “large.” The name Tanka Fund represents both our focus on the significant and positive impact of buffalo restoration in Indian communities as well as our partnership with Native American Natural Foods, makers of the Tanka Bar.

History of the Buffalo Nation
The importance of the buffalo to Indian people throughout North American cannot be overstated. Before the colonization of the continent and the buffalo’s near extermination, the buffalo was an integral part of daily life. Nearly all activities, such as hunting, cooking, sewing, making art, teaching, praying, singing and celebrating, incorporated and honored the buffalo.

Buffalo are the subject of many traditional stories and are a central part of the religious and cultural practices of many Indian nations across the Great Plains. [More information here.] According to Karlene Hunter, Oglala Lakota, “The history of the Buffalo Nation and the Lakota Nation is so intertwined as to be almost indistinguishable.”

Skull of Buffalo

This “intertwined” history was dramatically illustrated in the latter half of the 19th century. During this dark period, the U.S. government initiated a policy of removal, forcibly relocating Indian people to established reservations across the country. At the same time, European settlers and the U.S. military launched an all-out attack on the buffalo, the primary source of food, clothing, and shelter for Indian people in the Great Plains at the time. The military’s position concerning buffalo was brutally stated by General Phillip S. Sheridan, who said: “If I could learn that every buffalo in the northern herd were killed I would be glad…The destruction of the herd would do more to keep Indians quiet than anything else that could happen.”2

In the short span of 30 years, the North American buffalo population went from approximately 50 million to one small herd that at the time found refuge in what is now Yellowstone National Park. During this dark period in American history, not only were the buffalo almost exterminated, but an entire lifestyle and Buffalo-based culture that had existed for thousands of years were nearly destroyed.

Buffalo Are Returning
Many Indian people see the return of buffalo as a positive sign. According to Lakota leader and prophet Black Elk (1863-1950), when the buffalo return, the “Sacred Hoop” will be mended and Indian nations will become strong again. Working together with Native American Natural Foods and many other partners throughout Indian Country, we hope to build broad support for this vision so we can help to bring renewed life and strength to Buffalo-based Indian communities.

Resources
There are many good sources of information on the history and cultural significance of buffalo. Here are just a few:

STORY

Around 15 years ago I had a desire to grow my own plant-based medicine for my clients in my private practice. This leads me to locally take classes on gardening and pruning. The women in my family were healers, herbalist, gardeners who raised me with the passion of the Earth. This journey took me back to my early years with each step. I began to apply for every class, workshop, long term, short term on everything farming, plant-based. I eventually found my way into biodynamics spent time on farms in apprenticeships and they found biodynamic composting the heart of microbial medicine that I might be my greatest passion of all. I attended Steiner College and took the Biodynamic course, phenomenology course and other Nutrition based course. I started to build and consult on urban farming and backyard food productions and built many in the Reno Area.

Having study over my life with many Native Medicine people I guess it was inevitable that I would cross the most important work of my life, learning about the Native Seeds. The ancient seeds that have been protected and in some cases hidden until recently. These seeds are shared freely, they belong to those Native Families that have carried them like their own family members. This seeds not only can heal people, soil, earth but on my levels that would shock most people. I have been giving an opening to visit places where people are native seed growers, native seed banks and hosts of others who are doing the large-scale land restoration. I have planned this trip for 6 months will cover 4 months on the road as I go from place to place, doing work for knowledge trade. I consider this the most important study, travel, education and community building work of my life.

I have spent all the money I have been making to get the van road ready. I am in need of funding, donations and help to make this trip now. I thought for sure with the work I had I could manage the trip on a shoestring but people not paying for work, canceling and other issues has left me not in a good space to be able to leave on time. I have been stockpiling food storage from the local food banks for 6 months for the trip and harnessing all the resources I can. I need money for gas, camping in between locations and the small number of bills I have to continue to pay while on the road monthly. My Goal is $1000 by August 12, 2018.

I have been living out of my van since 2006 when I lost everything on the markets. After 4 major attacks by Gov and STATE on my private Traditional Osteopath practice over 5 years I could no longer keep an office and work with people in private these days. Has been a difficult period of my life, but I continue on with hope for the future, hope that people like me who give their lives to learn what we need to make the future good for everyone. Food and seed sovereignty really is the base of how we gain power and get out of fear as a collective consciousness.

In the future, I will have land where I can be a native Seed grower and educate, reskill Combat Veterans into the new farmers of America.

Thank You for helping me to be a part of changing our future of health, food, seeds, earth and the sovereignty that we all need.

A horrendous maneuver from the point of view of those who suffer it. They gave us their mind!  Through the mind, which, after all, is their mind, the predators inject into the lives of human beings whatever is convenient for them.” Don Juan Matus

“We often hesitate to follow our intuition out of fear. Most usually, we are afraid of the changes in our own life that our actions will bring. Intuitive guidance, however, is all about change. It is energetic data ripe with the potential to influence the rest of the world. To fear change but to crave intuitive clarity is like fearing the cold, dark night while pouring water on the fire that lights your cave. An insight the size of a mustard seed is powerful enough to bring down a mountain-sized illusion that may be holding our lives together. Truth strikes without mercy. We fear our intuitions because we fear the transformational power within our revelations.” Caroline Myss

“The farmer, meditating between the realms of nature (mineral, plant, animal, and human)—is thus creating a new agriculture, since he influences processes [i.e., the intake of cosmic forces, and the sending up of earth forces] that give rise to plant life which in turn supports more developed….forms of life….For the future evolution of the earth, man is now really the responsible…actor regarding processes in nature.” Sean O’Connor and Micahel Just
